nly 27% of Italian companies are

aware of the requirements of the new

European legislation on the protec-

tion of personal data – the General Data Pro-

tection Regulation - which comes into effect in

May of 2018 in Italy. Only 9% have already

launched a plan to adapt to it. In a few cas-

L’iter legislativo

Solo un’azienda italiana su quattro cono-

sce nel dettaglio le implicazioni del Gene-

es, there’s already a budget, and organization-

al changes have been decided. These are some

aspects that emerge from the research of the

Security & Privacy Observatory on the applica-

tion of the new European legislation on personal

data. An important step, because it will impact

on the application of Industry 4.0 paradigms.

The legislative process

Only one in four Italian companies understands

the implications of the General Data Protection

Regulation in detail. And even fewer, just 9%, have

already implemented a plan for adapting to it,

while 46% - a lot but not enough – have any kind

of analysis of the requirements underway. The da-

ta from the Security & Privacy Observatory of the

Politecnico di Milano are clear: there is still a seri-

ous lack of attention being given to the protection

of the personal data as outlined by the new GDPR

provisions, which will be enacted in May 2018,

just over a year from now. “In order to implement

the organizational changes required by European

law, management must be involved, taking advan-

tage of the time available to do all the necessary

analyses and not arrive unprepared for the dead-

line, thereby avoiding the risk of committing an

offense and being sanctioned by an administrative

authority”, warns Gabriele Fagg, scientific director

of the Information Security & Privacy Observatory

of the Politecnico di Milano.

In May 2018, all the member states of the European Union will see

the enactment of the General Data Protection Regulation, the new

community norm for the protection of personal data. A crucial step in

terms of sharing information according to the paradigms of Industry

4.0. A survey documents how Italian companies are preparing for it.
