Wind transformers ABB for Vestas

Posted 3 August 2016

ABB will supply 40 special wind transformers to equip the MHI Vestas Offshore wind turbines for the offshore wind farm in Walney, in the Irish Sea. Vestas wind turbines are 195 m tall, and weigh 1.000 tons, with 80 m rotor blades, and are able to produce up to 8 MW of power. The ABB transformer of 9,7 megavolt ampere, has customized design, using state-of-the-art raw materials and components, is vibration and short-circuit resistant and has a compact footprint, in order to accomodate the turbine door frame, having a weight around 30% lighter than a similar standard transformer.

The order is a follow-up of one received by ABB at the end of 2014, for 32 specialty transformers to equip similar turbines for the Burbo Bank Extension Offshore wind farm, also located in the Irish Sea. The Walney Extension, owned by the Danish utility Dong Energy A/S, will provide an additional generation potential of 660 MW, in addition to the 367 of the existing offshore wind farm. ABB will supply transformers for the western part of the Walney extension, accounting for a half of the new capacity, 330 MW. The company has also been contracted to supply a high-voltage cable system that will bring power from the Walney Extension wind park to the mainland.
