Solar energy vehicle SCM Group
The Italian SCM Group is collaborating with University of Bologna in the Onda Solare project (solar wave), aimed to create a new model of solar energy vehicle. Following the several successes achieved by the Emilia 3 model in challenges around the world, including beating one of the legendary Tesla Model S cars in a 24-hour race at the Circuit Zolder in Belgium, the new model will represent Italy again at the World Solar Challenge in Australia next October.
The goal of the project is building in less than 2 years a supreme-performance solar-powered car. The new model has a renewed design, compared to Emilia 3, and will be able to carry 4 passengers, with a surface of 5 sqm covered with solar panels, a weight of less than 230 kg and able to reach 120 km/h, providing an electric driving range of 500 km. The milled polyurethane models for the composite structure of the vehicle will be realized thanks to the Crif and CSR laboratories of SCM Groups, using SCM Accord 40 fx and Accord 50 fxm machining centers.
