Servo valve Moog, 53 years operating

Posted 13 June 2016

Running from 53 years now in the University of Saskatchewan’s Fluid power lab, it’s in Canada the oldest Moog servo valve operating in the world winning the Servo Valve Contest launched last September to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Moog’s operations in Europe. The award has been given to Doug Bitner, the lab’s manager who entered the video showing a Moog 21 series servo valve manufactured in 1963, operating as part of a single closed-loop test system, used by students and teachers for aerospace and industrial experiments.

The valve demonstrates the reliability of Moog’s components, having supported endurance testing on agricultural equipment frames, up to 1 million cycles for high pressure, and still exhibiting good characteristics. Second place winner to Walter Andreas from Iabg, analysis and testing company, for a Moog 22 series valve manufactured in 1966 running on a test application in Germany, and shared third prize for Tata’s Steel CPP Trostre Works in UK and U.S. Steel in Canada, both for Moog 60 series servo valves made in 1969, installed on a steering rod in the mill and on a tension leveller.
