Moog announces the agreement for the creation of a research Joint Laboratory with IIT, the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, Italy, aimed to develop quadruped robots actuation, control and power systems. During the next three years, the Moog@IIT Lab will focus its activities on actuators optimized for autonomous legged robots, among them the ones created by IIT, with the purpose of bringing them outside the laboratory for real applications on the market.
Another main focus of the Lab will be the development of compact power source systems, enabling robots to be autonomous on the energy respect, and in addition the ideation of control solutions for emerging robotics projects. Additive manufacturing technologies with metals, such as titanium and aluminium, will also have a crucial role in the realization of new actuation systems and robots components. The robot to be employed for the testing of new innovative solutions will be the HyQ robot – Hydraulic Quadruped, born in 2010 at the IIT in Genoa, acquired in a latter version by the ETH-Zurich in Switzerland and equipped in its latest version with for legs moved by 12 actuators, with a total weight of 80 kg.
