Largest ABB robot ever

Posted 11 January 2016

The IRB 8700 it’s the largest high payload robot ABB has ever constructed, 25% faster than competitors, offering high performances and low TCO. The multipurpose industrial robot has reach of 3,5 m and is capable of a handling payload of up to 800 kg (1.000 kg with wrist down, 630 with LeanID). Unrivaled payload is obtained thanks to the advanced ABB motion control technology, able to assure high moments of inertia (here at 725 kgm2), enabling the robot to adapt its speed according to part’s weight and dimensions.

Low momentum and high speed are also kept thanks to a compact footprint, optimized counterweight, parallel linkages, stiff axes and fewer motor drives. The robot is indeed equipped with only one motor and one gear per robot axis, it doesn’t have gas springs and has only a reliable counterweight and mechanical springs for counter balancing, lowering components number delivering shorter cycle times and higher accuracy. It is also available in configuration with reach of 4,2 m and payload of 550 kg.
