Gotthard 2016 with ABB

Posted 15 June 2016

A wide range of energy-efficient and innovative ABB technologies ensure the power supply and ventilation in the Gotthard Base Tunnel infrastructure, officially opened this June. Consisting of two 57 km long single-track tubes, the Gotthard Base Tunnel is the world’s longest railway tunnel constructed by date. In the path of a relationship going back a hundred years, ABB provided SBB, the swiss federal railway company, essential electrical components, such as gas insulated switch-gears and protection equipments for the continued energy supply to power the tunnel infrastructure.

The units are resistant to the extremely aggressive operating conditions, including air temperatures that can exceed 40°C and humidity at 70%. Special energy supply systems are also installed in the cross emergency evacuation exits, using a special cable protection system offering good impact strength and outstanding fire safety characteristics, as well as ingress protection against water and dust. In addition, ABB developed a special drive system with traction transformers, traction converters and battery charges for the EC250, the high speed train by Stadler Rail running through the Gotthard Base Tunnel from 2019.
