The Kollmorgen AKM servo motors and AKD servo drives provide new levels of virtual reality to the passengers of the virtual roller coaster developed by the Indian motion and simulation game factory Smaaash. The two companies have once again partnered to create the Finger Coaster application, a virtual roller coaster using virtual reality to turn the ride into a real, live experience.

This is achieved thanks to the Kollmorgen high-performance motor and drive technology, which ensures that the characteristics movements of the coaster seats are almost identical to those of a real collar coster, blasting along on rails thanks to motors and controls. The trick of Finger coaster is that passengers can build their own route via touch function, being able to decide for thermselves just how racy they want their roller coaster ride to be.

Kollmorgen and Smaaash already collaborated in the past in several VR simulator projects, offering Kollmorgen the chance to work on interesting technical challenges, extending the company’s engineering competence even further. On the other hand, Smaaash benefits from the global support offered by Kollmorgen, resulting in short voting paths and the possibility to have all the motion-related components under one roof, with motors that are reliable even in the long term.

In the future, Smaaash wants to convert to the new AKM2G Servo motor line, which is characterized by a performance innovation of plus 30% torque density, in which the installation volume remains compact. This means that the motors offer significantly more power with the same space requirements. Highly accurate, safety-critical, and highly dynamic applications are even more efficient, thanks to optimized power density, opening up new possibilities in these kind of applications.
