4D printing Kinematics for transforming design
Kinematics introduces the fourth dimension of change with 4D Printing, allowing to create flexible objects that can transform over time. The Kinematic app, developed by Nervous System, can create complex and foldable forms composed of articulated modules, in some cases able of self-assemble. The system provide a way to turn any three dimensional shape into a flexible structure using 3D printing.
In addition, shapes can be squashed into their smallest arrangement and 3D printed economically. The technology combines computational geometry techniques with rigid body physics and customization. Kinematics allows to produce designs composed of 10 to 1.000 unique components, that interlock to construct dynamic mechanical structures. The hinges are 3D printed in place, requiring no assembly.
