And above all how do you plan to make it a language used worldwide? “The global intiative ‘umati - universal ma- chine technology interface’ was created to promote the use of open, standardized data exchange between machines, com- ponents and software. In itself, umati is not a language, but strives to implement the variety of specifications that have been developed using the communication framework technology OPC UA. Currently, about 30 so-called ‘OPC UA Companion Specifications’ have been published for various technologies, such as Metrology, Weighing Technology, Plastics and Rub- ber Machinery, Robots, Vision Systems, Woodworking and Metalworking Machine Tools, and many more. Some 30 more such standards are under development They comprise the ‘Global Production Language’. With umati, they are put to use throughout the manufacturing industries by providing guidelines for implementa- tions, creating a community, demonstrat- ing the added value and supporting devel- opment of open source software. umati is sponsored by VDW and VDMA and has more than 300 partners, of which 50% are non-German, and has already integrated about 15 different technologies. A truly global initiative, to create a level playing field for a data driven economy”. EMO is an important appointment for the sector. And for Germany what benefits do you expect it to bring? “As a fair, EMO Hannover serves as an in- novation platform for exhibitors, enabling them to showcase their advancements in technology and products.
