British Steel has opened a logistics centre in Lecco, north Italy, to support the delivery of a full range of high quality long-length rail and expanding its activities in the European railway sector. The strategic investment is located in the heart of the EU’s rail infrastructure, allowing British Steel to meet the growing demand for long length rails throughout Italy, where the company is already a key supplier of the Italian state rail operator RFI.

The operation will enable the company to serve rail networks in Italy with just-in-time and reliable delivery, anywhere in the country. The company already has a significant presence in Central Europe, employing 420 workers at its French rail mill at Hayange, while running its manufacturing operations in Scunthorpe, England. In addition to being a significant supplier for the British and French markets, the company has also participated in major projects in the railway sector in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
